No second lossy step

Unlike converting to MP3, this adds no compression of its own: the AAC is decoded once and written out as raw samples. For audio headed into an editor, that matters — every later export starts from the cleanest copy this file can give.

Honest about the size and the ceiling

Expect several times the M4A's size, and no gain in quality — WAV preserves exactly what the AAC decodes to, artefacts included. The page says this because tools that imply otherwise are selling disk usage as fidelity.

Questions about M4A and WAV

Will WAV sound better than the M4A?
No. AAC is lossy, so some detail was discarded when the file was first saved, and nothing can restore it. What WAV gives you is no further loss: from here on, every edit and every save keeps exactly what the M4A decoded to. Better is impossible; not-worse is the honest promise.
Why do editors and samplers want WAV at all?
Raw PCM needs no decoder: hardware can stream it from disk, and editors can cut it at any sample without decoding around the cut. Compressed formats decode in frames, which is why some tools refuse them or import them slowly. WAV is the format that requires nothing of the machine reading it.
What sample rate and bit depth comes out?
16-bit at 44.1 kHz — CD audio's own shape, which is what nearly everything downstream expects. Voice memos are recorded at 44.1 or 48 kHz mono; the resample on the way through is inaudible for speech, and the file stays a third smaller than a padded 24-bit export would be.
Does it take M4P files from the old iTunes store?
No. M4P is encrypted, and the decryption never passes through a page like this one. An ordinary M4A — a voice memo, a recorder app's output, an unprotected rip — converts fine.
