- Will the JPG be bigger or smaller than the WebP?

- Does converting lose quality?
- One generation's worth, kept small by encoding at high quality. Both formats are lossy, so the artefacts stack in principle; in an ordinary photograph you will not find the difference. For an image you plan to keep editing, PNG is the no-further-loss option.
- What happens to transparent backgrounds?
- They are filled with white, deliberately — JPG has no transparency, and unfilled areas would come out black. If the transparency itself is the point (a logo, a cut-out), convert to PNG instead, where it survives.
- Why do websites use WebP if everything wants JPG?
- Because pages load faster with smaller images, and every browser reads WebP now. The friction is at the edges: desktop software, older tools, strict forms. Websites optimise for their bandwidth; this page exists for your compatibility.
